Dubai chocolate in Ethiopia: the bar behind the searches, and where the pistachio comes from

The bar reached Addis Ababa through a phone screen and the airport, and the searches ask who has it and what it costs. Here is what the bar is, why most of the filling comes from Gaziantep, which shelf it can live on after the road from Djibouti, and what an importer buys.

The bar

A thick milk chocolate shell filled with pistachio cream and toasted kadayif, the shredded pastry that gives the bite its crunch. The name comes from the city where it went viral, a few hours’ flight away and the transit airport for much of the country; the filling comes from further north. Pistachio is grown around Gaziantep and kadayif is made there in the same streets, which is why we were making pistachio and kadayif fillings long before the bar had a name, and why the bar is now made there in retail, gift and catering formats.

Where the searches go

Where to buy, the price, the supermarkets and the cafés of Addis Ababa, and the airport. An importer reads those searches differently: the demand is proven, the supermarket shelf and the hotel shop are already asking, and a bar with a producer behind it, registered and on the right shelf in the right container, is what the trade is missing. The chocolate page lists the bar and the pistachio tablets next to it; pistachio cream in jars is on the pistachio page.

The chiller question, and the road

This bar is chocolate, and in Ethiopia that decides where it can be sold and how it travels: in a reefer to Djibouti, in a cool chain by rail or road to Addis Ababa, into a supermarket or a hotel with a chiller, not the kiosk in the afternoon sun. It is stated as chocolate on the offer, next to the compound lines that go to the everyday shelf, and the offer states where the reefer chain ends. An importer that plans the two shelves separately sells both.

The price question

For a shopper the price is set by the supermarket; for an importer it is in the offer: the price per bar in US dollars, the case count, the pallet plan, the tariff line, the duty that applies on the day, the payment route and the inland leg. Nothing that changes with the exchange rate or the season is printed on this site. The Ethiopia page lists what stays the same on every offer.

Under whose name

In our standard packs from the first container, or under your own brand: the Ethiopian private label page goes through the formats, the two-language label content, the registration and the artwork approval. A supermarket group or a hotel supplier that wants its own name on the bar for the chiller has a producer for it.

What to send first

The lines from the chocolate page, the confectionery page and the Turkish delight page, the quantity per line, the delivery term you want, and whether any line carries your own brand. The written offer follows within two working days, in US dollars and the registration documents and the inland leg stated; the samples page explains how to taste the lines first, and the Ethiopia page lists what stays the same on every offer.

Is Dubai chocolate made in Dubai?

The name comes from where it went viral. The pistachio and the kadayif come from around Gaziantep, and the bars and fillings we quote are made there.

Can a shop order a few cartons?

The unit of sale is one full container, mixed across lines. A shop buys from the importer or the wholesaler that brings it in; every line is in the offer.

Does the bar need a reefer?

Yes, to Djibouti, and a cool chain to Addis Ababa and a chiller at the other end; it is stated as chocolate on the offer.
