Lithuania: the share table misleads, the unit value tells you the position

Lithuania imports around 239 million dollars of chocolate a year. Poland moves 29.31 per cent of it, Germany 17.85, Belgium 10.48. Türkiye is ninth, on 2.77 per cent. Read that column alone and you file Türkiye under marginal. Read the price column instead. Turkish chocolate crosses into Lithuania at roughly 10.48 dollars a kilo, against a Turkish world average near 5.57. The share says how little; the unit value says which step of the shelf.

What the share table says — and what it does not

Volume rankings are mostly a map of geography and lead time. The origins at the top sit inside the single market, a truck away, running large-format plants built to fill the base of a shelf.

But the table answers one question — who fills the shelf — not which step of it. Ninth place says Turkish product is not the base of that aisle. It says nothing about what those 2.77 per cent are made of — and for a buyer adding to a range rather than replacing a pallet of plain tablets, that is the question with money in it.

Unit value, read against two references

A price per kilo means nothing alone, and one reference is never enough. The first is Türkiye's own world average, near 5.57 dollars a kilo. What arrives here at about 10.48 is close to double it: not the cheap end finding a quiet market, but the narrow, expensive end.

The second is the one enquiries skip: the average kilo price Lithuania itself pays across all origins in that heading. Read an offer against both before calling it premium or dear. Sugar confectionery differs — eleventh place, 2.15 per cent, 3.36 dollars a kilo — a heading that sits lower by nature, not by finish.

What actually sits on that step

At a ten-dollar kilo the lines are specific. Lokum with whole pistachio, double-roasted lokum and the kadayıf-filled lines, bulk or in retail boxes. The Dubai-style bar. Chocolate dragées and sugared almonds sorted by colour and calibre. Gelled sweets in bulk cases for weigh-out counters. Pistachio spread in jars.

Two clarifications, early. The jar is often searched for as a paste or a cream: what ships is a spread, not a 100 per cent pâtisserie paste — if that is what you need, composition is confirmedfirst. On any coated line the offer states whether the coating is chocolate or a cocoa glaze: a vegetable-fat coating cannot be labelled chocolate in the EU.

A.TR and what goes on the label

Lithuania is an EU member and Türkiye and the EU are in a customs union, so processed food travels under an A.TR movement certificate. On duty, one sentence is the honest one: the quotation states what applies on the day.

On the pack, EU food information rules apply and the mandatory particulars appear in Lithuanian. The company first placing the goods on the EU market is named there — in practice the importer — so the label is a shared job. Certificates are held for our factory; copies are available on request.

One container, minimum per line, and temperature

The selling unit is a full container or truck; there are no part loads. The minimum is set per line and written into the quotation — not per container. That is what lets a first order carry six or seven references in measured quantity, each on its own pallet.

Chocolate and chocolate-coated goods travel at +18 to +20 °C, so in hot months a refrigerated container is offered; if a dry one is preferred anyway, that risk passes to the buyer in writing, before loading. Lokum, dragées and gelled sweets go dry all year.

What to send

Send the lines you want with a quantity against each, the format for each — bulk case for a weigh-out counter, or retail box — the destination city and the season. Say whether a line runs under your own label — there, nothing goes to print without written approval. The written quotation follows within two working days: technical specification, ingredients and allergens, net weight, case and pallet data, minimum, tariff position. Payment is 50 per cent at order, 50 before the container leaves, against loading photographs.

Türkiye holds only 2.77 per cent of Lithuanian chocolate imports. Is it a marginal origin?

Marginal in volume, yes — ninth place, against 29.31 per cent for Poland and 17.85 for Germany. But Turkish chocolate enters Lithuania at roughly 10.48 dollars a kilo against a Turkish world average of about 5.57, so the small share is made of high-value product. It is a specialty position on the shelf, not a base-volume one.

Is the pistachio product in jars a pâtisserie paste?

No. It is sold as a spread and it is not a 100 per cent pâtisserie paste, whatever term it is searched under. If you need a pastry ingredient rather than a jar for retail, say so at the enquiry stage: composition and format are confirmed before a quotation is written.

Which customs document applies, and what is the rate?

Lithuania is in the EU and Türkiye and the EU are in a customs union, so processed food moves under an A.TR movement certificate. On the rate, the quotation states what applies on the day, against the tariff position written for each line.
