The everyday bar
Walk a Saudi supermarket or a wholesale shop in Riyadh and the Turkish shelf is long: wrapped bars, wafers, filled minis sold by the kilo, the Eid assortment. It sells on price and on being known, and the Saudi shelf has known it for a generation. That is why the search volume for Turkish chocolate in the Kingdom is large and why most of it is retail. An importer does not need to be told the everyday bar sells; it needs a producer and a container.
The pistachio end
The other end is made in Gaziantep, where the pistachio grows: milk and dark tablets with whole pistachio, pistachio bars, the Dubai style bar with pistachio cream and kadayif that the Riyadh and Jeddah trade has been asking for since the trend began, pistachio cream in jars, and the pistachio lokum roll. Pistachio cream
Pistachio cream, in Arabic the search that grows fastest around the category, is the jar the bar pulled along: pistachio spreads with a high share of pistachio, and milder hazelnut and cocoa blends, labelled as Antep pistachio. Jars travel dry, which makes them the easiest premium line to add to a container of everyday bars. Jars can carry your own brand on selected lines.
One container, both ends
The usual Saudi container is mixed: standard-pack everyday lines that sell on sight, next to the pistachio tablet, the Dubai style bar, the cream jar and the lokum roll that build the importer’s premium range.
