Turkish delight and dragées for Yemeni occasions: the formats and the carton behind them

Weddings, births and the feasts after Ramadan carry the same two products almost everywhere they are marked: a box of Turkish delight and a tray of sugared almonds. They are also the two easiest lines to import, because both travel dry and keep well. This page sets out the formats the trade asks for and how a carton of each is actually quoted.

Why these two travel well

Turkish delight is a firm jelly of sugar and starch, dusted and sometimes filled with nuts. The classic sugared almond is a sugar shell over an almond. Both are dry, stable in controlled conditions and carry a long shelf life stated on our data sheet, which makes them the most predictable lines in a mixed container.

The exception is chocolate-covered lokum: for shipping purposes it counts as a chocolate line and is quoted in a reefer.

The formats the occasion trade asks for

Boxed Turkish delight for the gift shelf; the pistachio roll, sliced; plain and nut-filled cubes in bulk cartons for shops that box locally; sugared almonds in white and in colours; and chocolate dragées with almond, hazelnut, pistachio or fruit centres.

The Turkish delight page and the dragée page list the groups; the offer adds the case weight and the pieces per carton per line.

Colour is a production run

For dragées this is the number that matters: each colour is a run, so the minimum counts per colour and per line rather than against the order total. A mixed carton comes off a different process from single-colour cartons and is priced accordingly.

Deciding the palette before asking for a price saves a round of correspondence, because the answer changes with it.

Boxed here or boxed there

Two ways to buy. Printed retail boxes arrive ready for the shelf and carry our standard pack or your brand. Bulk cartons arrive plain and are boxed and ribboned locally, which is how most of the occasion trade works, because the presentation follows local taste and changes faster than a print run.

The second route also lowers the landed cost per kilo, since the freight is not paying for air inside decorative packaging.

What separates two identical-looking boxes

Filling and dusting. A plain lokum, a pistachio lokum and a double-roasted pistachio roll share a name and a shelf but not a cost sheet, because the nut is almost the whole difference in price.

The offer states the filling, the nut percentage where it applies, the piece weight and the shelf life per line, taken from our technical data sheet, so two quotations can be compared on content rather than on the photograph.

Seasons and lead time

Demand concentrates around Ramadan, the feasts that follow and the wedding season. Production time counts from the deposit and the approved artwork, and is stated per line in the offer, so a seasonal carton is ordered well before the season it is meant for.

What to send

The groups, the colours where they apply, the quantity per line and the port. The offer states the minimum per line and per colour and the case weight.

The references from the chocolate page and the confectionery page, the quantity per line and the port. The written offer follows within two working days, in US dollars, with the certifying body named per line; the Yemen page lists what stays the same on every offer.

Do these lines need a reefer?

No, except chocolate-covered lokum, which travels with the chocolate lines. Plain Turkish delight and sugar-shelled almonds travel dry.

Can we order plain cartons and box them ourselves?

Yes, and most of the occasion trade does. Bulk cartons are quoted per kilo with the case weight stated per line.

Is the dragée minimum per order or per colour?

Per colour and per line, because each colour is a production run. The figure is stated in the offer.
