Turkish delight in Malaysia: the Turkish sweet shops of KL and the halal box from Gaziantep

Kuala Lumpur has its own Turkish sweet shops, and the searches point at them. Behind the counter is a carton, and behind the carton a producer in Gaziantep with a halal certificate the Malaysian authority can check.

The Turkish sweet shops

Kuala Lumpur has Turkish sweet shops and cafes that bake their own baklava and kunafa and sell Turkish delight by the box, and a Turkish restaurant scene the searches for Turkish food Malaysia point at. What those shops buy in is what they do not make: boxed Turkish delight, the pistachio roll, chocolate covered lokum, dragées and pistachio cream. We do not name them; the trade knows them. We quote the importers and distributors that supply them, and a shop group that imports for itself.

The halal box

The Malaysian buyer asks two questions of a Turkish delight box: which body certified it, and whether the roll is the real Gaziantep one. The first is answered per line in the offer, with the certifying body named so recognition can be checked; plain starch-set lokum carries few of the ingredients a certifier looks at, and the data sheet states each recipe. The second is answered by the city: the finger roll filled with whole pistachio and coated in coconut or kadayif is made where the pistachio grows. The Turkish delight page lists the groups.

The gift and the door gift

Turkish delight in small printed boxes is the door gift for the guest who does not eat chocolate, and the Hari Raya gift that is neither cookie nor chocolate. Gift companies buy it by the carton and can have the box printed under their own name on selected lines, with the label content prepared before printing. The Malaysian private label page lists the formats.

The chocolate bar that borrowed the name

Some of the search volume is for a chocolate bar with a rose jelly centre, a British confection sold on Malaysian shelves. It is not lokum. What Gaziantep makes in that direction is chocolate covered Turkish delight, cubes and pistachio pieces in a chocolate shell, sold in boxes; a bar format is sourced on request. The Turkish delight explained article covers the recipe and the varieties.

How it travels

Plain and dusted lokum travels dry all year to Port Klang. Chocolate covered pieces follow the chocolate rule on this route: a reefer year round, because the container crosses the tropics. Each line has its own pallet, so the Turkish delight box shares the container with dragées for door gifts and pistachio chocolate for the shelf, under the origin proof the trade agreement asks for. The Malaysia page lists what stays the same on every offer.
