Moldova's shelf is filled from the east — and that decides the pitch

Two numbers explain the Moldovan market better than any description of it. Ukraine supplies roughly twenty-seven per cent of the country's chocolate imports at about four and a quarter dollars a kilo. Russia supplies around twenty-four per cent at about three and a half. Together that is half the shelf, arriving at a price no Gaziantep producer is going to meet. Understanding what follows from that is the difference between a range that sells and a quotation nobody answers.

What half a shelf at four dollars means

It means the everyday tablet is settled. Whatever a Moldovan retailer needs in the way of plain milk chocolate at a working price, they already have two large neighbours supplying it with short lead times and no sea freight.

An importer who asks us to compete there is asking the wrong question, and we will say so rather than quote something we cannot stand behind. The container we load is not cheaper; it is different.

Where Türkiye actually sits

On the same year's figures Türkiye was the sixth source of Moldova's chocolate imports at about five and a half per cent — but the unit value was roughly eleven and a half dollars a kilo, the highest among the leading suppliers and close to three times the Ukrainian figure. In sugar confectionery the position is stronger again: fourth source, about nine and a half per cent of a twenty-three million dollar market.

Unit value is declared value divided by weight. It is not a margin and not a shelf price; what it describes is what kind of goods are moving. A container of everyday tablets and a container of pistachio and kadayıf bars land in very different places on that scale.

So what does the container carry

The lines the eastern suppliers do not run, and the local industry does not either: pistachio and kadayıf bars, rahat turcesc in bulk units and in boxes, chocolate dragées and sugared almonds, coated nuts, and pistachio spread in jars.

Six or seven references in modest quantities rather than one long run — the minimum is set per line, not by the container, which is what makes a short list of many things possible in a market this size.

The local industry is small but not absent

Worth saying plainly, because it changes the pitch a second time. Moldova has its own confectionery producer of long standing, and it already makes a Dubai-style pistachio bar sold as made in Moldova.

So the trend line is covered too. What is not covered is the range around it — the delight, the dragées, the coated nuts and the spread — and that is where a container from Gaziantep earns its freight.

Two things this page does not publish

Duty rates are not here, because they change; the offer states the tariff line and what applies on the day, and for Moldova the document is a EUR.1 under the Türkiye–Moldova free trade agreement rather than the A.TR used next door. We do not publish shelf life, certificate numbers or a standing lead time either — those come per line in the offer.

One caveat on the figures: what Türkiye reports as exports and what Moldova reports as imports never match exactly. The numbers above are Moldova's own import record, because that is the market the buyer is standing in.

What to send

Send the references, the quantity per line and the delivery address, and say whether you are buying for a retail shelf, for the angro trade or for a Turkish-goods aisle. The written offer follows within two working days, with, the minimum per line and the transport regime for each range.

Can you match the price of chocolate from Ukraine or Russia?

No, and we will say so rather than quote something we cannot stand behind. Those sources fill half the Moldovan shelf at around three to four dollars a kilo. What arrives from Türkiye arrives at roughly eleven and a half, because it is a different kind of product.

Then why does Turkish chocolate sell in Moldova at all?

Because it is the specific end of the range rather than the everyday tablet: pistachio-forward lines, kadayıf, rahat turcesc, dragées and coated nuts. The trade record shows Türkiye as the sixth source in chocolate and the fourth in sugar confectionery.

Is a full container realistic for a market this size?

Only mixed. Six or seven references in modest quantities fills a shelf and turns over; a full container of one reference fills a warehouse. The minimum is set per line, not per container.

How to order

Send the list. We do the rest.

Send your product list with approximate quantities and the destination port. You get one offer covering every line, then one container, loaded and photographed before the doors close.
