Which end of the Hungarian shelf Turkish chocolate arrives at

Hungary imported $588.1 million of chocolate in 2025, and Türkiye sits eleventh with 1.42%. Read the share alone and the country looks marginal; the next column inverts it. Turkish chocolate landed at $14.96 per kilo, higher than every larger supplier. Türkiye is not arriving here as cheap volume but as filled, specialist lines — and that should change how a first order is built.

Home  /  Blog  /  Türkiye is eleventh in Hungary's chocolate imports but lands at a higher price per kilo than every larger supplier — here is what that means for a first order.  ·

What the kilo column is showing

The top of the table is short truck runs. Germany holds 26.29% at $9.56 per kilo, Poland 13.50% at $8.82, Slovakia 12.14% at $7.50, Italy 7.83% at $8.34, Czechia 7.72% at $11.67. Austria 6.31%, Belgium 6.00%, Serbia 5.35%, Ukraine 4.28% and the Netherlands 3.26% complete the ten. That tonnage is everyday shelf inside one customs territory.

Türkiye is the outlier: 1.42% of the value at $14.96 per kilo. Nobody gets that far above the leaders by selling the same bar for less. You get there with filling, inclusions and hand-work, where the nut carries the cost, not the sugar.

Why the price-cutting frame fails

Buyers often open a Turkish conversation expecting to undercut the shelf. Against suppliers landing between $7.50 and $9.56 a kilo from inside the EU, that contest is lost before samples are opened. Freight, pistachio cost and per-line minimums all pull the same way.

The useful frame is the reverse. A category with ten competent everyday suppliers needs the item none of them make, not an eleventh. Ask what the shelf is missing and price that against nothing.

The second table says something else

Sugar confectionery without cocoa is a separate heading and a separate story. Hungary imported $144.4 million of it: Belgium 29.76%, Poland 22.87%, Germany 18.78%, and Türkiye fourth at 4.51%, at $3.38 per kilo. Fourth place at a working price is a lane Hungarian buyers already use.

Read the two together and the shape of an order appears: one heading is where Turkish goods already move in volume, the other works only at the specialist end. The container that respects both is the one that repeats.

The lines the shelf does not carry

Four come up repeatedly. A pistachio-and-kadayıf filled bar in the Dubai style, where the quote states per line whether the coating is chocolate or a cocoa glaze. Lokum with whole pistachios, and the double-roasted version — a different product from the plain cubes. Dragées and sugared almonds sorted by colour and calibre, as pick-and-mix work needs.

The fourth is pistachio cream in jars, searched under names translating as paste. Be exact: we sell a spreadable cream for the retail jar, not a 100% pastry paste for a confectioner's bench. Couverture, bulk chocolate by the kilo and raw nuts are not in the main range; they are sourced on request, with composition and format confirmed first.

Building the first container

We sell by full container or full truck, but the minimum is set per line not per container. So a first order can carry six or seven items in measured quantities: the lines that turn volume plus the two or three the shelf has never had. Each line travels on its own pallet, under one packing list.

Chocolate and chocolate-coated goods travel at +18/+20 °C. In hot months a refrigerated container is quoted; if a dry one is preferred, the temperature risk passes to the buyer in writing before loading. Lokum and sugared almonds go dry all year. Payment is 50% at order and 50% before departure, against loading photographs. Hungary is in the EU, so the goods travel with an A.TR movement certificate.

What to send us

Send the channel — retail shelf, pick-and-mix by weight, gift and celebration, or foodservice — plus the target retail price band and the pack sizes you already run. If you want your own label on a line, say so now: we prepare it from our technical specification, and nothing is printed without written approval.

A written quote follows within two working days, line by line: specification, ingredients and allergens, net weight, carton and pallet data, minimum, and tariff position, stating what duty applies on the day. Certificates are held for our factory and carry our name; copies are available on request. Start at Markets · Hungary or see how a mixed container is assembled.

Turkish chocolate lands in Hungary above German or Polish prices per kilo. Why buy it?

Because it is not the same product. The suppliers below $10 a kilo cover the everyday shelf from inside the EU, and that position is not worth attacking. The $14.96 figure reflects filled, nut-heavy lines — pistachio bars, whole-pistachio lokum, calibrated dragées — that the everyday suppliers do not make. You are buying a gap, not a discount.

Can we test a few items before committing to a full container?

The sales unit is a full container or a full truck, with no part loads, but the minimum applies per line. In practice one container can carry six or seven items in measured quantities, so a first order can test several lines at once instead of betting on one. The quote states the minimum for each line.

Is the pistachio cream in jars the same as the pistachio paste used in pastry?

No, and the two are worth separating. Our jar product is a spreadable cream for retail. A 100% pistachio paste for a pastry bench is a different specification and is not in the main range; it can be looked at on request, with composition and format confirmed before a quote is issued.
